Statement from the CSU Vice-Chancellor on the death of the Hon Joe Schipp OAM

28 NOVEMBER 2017

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Vann has issued a statement in response to the death of the Hon Joe Schipp OAM.

Charles Sturt University mourns with sadness the death of the late Hon Joe Schipp OAM.

Mr Schipp was a tireless advocate for rural and regional New South Wales and made a significant contribution to public life for which the University and the Wagga Wagga community pays him tribute.

The efforts of Mr Schipp alongside those of the late Hon Wal Fife ensured the establishment of Charles Sturt University and for their joint labour we are thankful and will always remember and acknowledge Mr Schipp's support.

Mr Schipp had a distinguished career in politics as the State Member for Wagga Wagga in the NSW Parliament from 1975 until his retirement in 1999. During his time in office Mr Schipp served in a number of shadow ministerial roles as well as the Minister for Housing in the Greiner Government and the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Racing in the Fahey Government.

Charles Sturt University recognised Mr Schipp's lifetime of achievement, his community service and his contribution to public life by acknowledging him as a Doctor of the University in 1999.

On behalf of the entire University community I extend to Mr Schipp's family our deepest sympathies and our grateful thanks for his life and the service he gave to his country and the community.
