The Chancellor of Charles Sturt University (CSU), Mr Lawrie Willett, AO, will formally announce the appointment of two new Pro Chancellors at the University on Tuesday 26 August.
Mr Willett, who is Chair of the University Council, said the Council had recently approved the appointment of Mrs Carole McDiarmid, PSM, as the Pro Chancellor for the Central Region (Bathurst, Orange and Dubbo), and Mr Angelos Frangopoulos as the Pro Chancellor for Sydney (including sites at Homebush, Lidcombe, Manly and Parramatta).
"The ceremonial office of Pro Chancellor is a key role for Charles Sturt University, providing a local bridge between the University and its communities, and reinforcing the importance of our regions in the life of the University," Mr Willett said.
"Mrs McDiarmid is well known and very highly regarded in Western NSW as the former Regional Director of the Department of Education. She was recently appointed an Adjunct Professor of the CSU Faculty of Education, and her involvement with the advancement of Indigenous school education in western NSW is of particular note.
"Mr Frangopoulos is one of the most influential media executives in Australia today, and as a member of the Council of Charles Sturt University has made a very significant and distinguished contribution to its mission, development and advancement. As a CSU journalism graduate, he is one of the University's most outstanding and nationally recognised graduates and a leader in the Australian and international media industry."
About the Pro Chancellors
Mrs McDiarmid is the former Regional Director, Western NSW, NSW Department of Education and was awarded the Public Service Medal in 2009 for her outstanding public service to education in western New South Wales.Throughout an accomplished 37-year career in public education, she has held many positions including Cluster Director of Schools Western Region, District Superintendent in Bathurst and Orange, and as Principal at Spring Terrace Public School, Wattle Flat Public School, and Bowen Public School.
Mr Frangopoulos has been a key influencer in growing the Australian and New Zealand pay television news sector in Australia, playing a central role in transforming the television news industry and establishing a new paradigm for journalism in Australia and elsewhere. He has held senior news executive roles in Australia and the United Kingdom and is currently Chief Executive Officer of Australian News Channel. Mr Frangopoulos has been one of the most loyal and committed graduates of the University, serving as a member of the University Council for 12 years, and holding key roles in committees. He has mentored students, employed graduates, and made significant financial contributions to the University including scholarships, television production equipment, and a Sky News subscription over many years.Mr Frangopoulos will also receive an Honorary Doctor of Arts for his services to journalism and higher education in Australia and to the University, as well as the naming in his honour of a building at CSU in Bathurst which currently houses radio 2MCE and National Radio News.
