Charles Sturt University (CSU) dentistry students have donated their time and money to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) in November.
Fourteen fourth-year students from the CSU School of Dentistry and Health Sciences are currently volunteering with the RFDS during their four-week placement in Dubbo, NSW.
The students have had the opportunity to assist with the provision of much needed dental services in remote NSW locations such as Bourke, Collarenebri, Lightning Ridge, and Goodooga.
As members of the CSU Student Dental Association (SDA), they donated $1 000 to the RFDS TOOTH Program from various association fundraising activities during the year.
Ms Jessica Zachar, a fourth-year dentistry student and immediate past president of the SDA, recently completed a rotation with the RFDS TOOTH Program that included providing oral health services in Bourke and Collarenebri in far western NSW.
"Working with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) was an unforgettable and unique experience," Ms Zachar said. "I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to offer dental care with dentist Dr Callum Addison.
"It has enhanced my knowledge about providing dental treatment in rural and remote Australia to people who generally do not have access to a local dentist."
Ms Zachar said the CSU SDA makes an annual donation to the RFDS TOOTH Program to show their support for this invaluable service."The SDA is passionate about closing the gap and providing access to oral health services for communities in rural and remote areas of Australia," she said. "I hope this donation will assist the RFDS to continue and extend its services for rural Australia."
