Charles Sturt University Adjunct Associate Professor Dr Cassandra Schefe has been named a finalist in the Leadership and Advisory (Farm Advisory) category of the inaugural PepsiCo Global Farmer Awards.
Dr Schefe was recognised for her outstanding leadership in sustainable agriculture through her role as Principal Scientist for the Cool Soil Initiative (CSI), a multi-commodity program supporting over 200 growers across Australia.
Under her guidance, CSI has expanded from a single wheat-focused partnership to a nationally significant program involving six corporate partners and five major commodities.
Her work has helped farmers implement climate-smart practices such as lime incorporation, reduced tillage, legume rotations, stubble retention and use of enhanced efficiency fertilisers.
These practices have led to improved soil health, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and increased productivity.
Notably, CSI wheat paddocks consistently deliver emissions intensity values below the national average, with early data showing reductions in canola emissions intensity also.
Dr Schefe, who is based in Rutherglen, Victoria, said “contributing to the design, implementation and on-ground delivery of a globally-relevant program that has the farmer's best interests at heart is something I am so proud of”.
“I am very humbled at the trust and support given by PepsiCo and the other companies.
“While being personally recognised for this at a global level was amazing, recognition also needs to go to the CSI team, as collectively we have built a locally relevant, scientifically credible program based on relationships and trust.”
Dr Schefe’s practical, science-based approach includes regular on-farm visits, educational workshops and one-on-one advisory sessions.
“The combination of working with the world's most fragile and weathered soils and a national culture of farming innovation means that I am constantly challenged to provide the best quality, science-based information to farmers,” she said.
“This information is then communicated in a way that makes sense in their systems, and then I work with them to find the solutions.”
She also provides leadership across several national programs, including the national Carbon Farming Outreach Program.
Dr Schefe’s nomination reflects her commitment to bridging corporate sustainability goals with grower needs, ensuring practical, science-driven solutions for Australian agriculture.
