A Charles Sturt University (CSU) student has secured a place in the Australian World University Winter Games team.
Mr Phillip Bellingham, who is studying the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) in the CSU School of Teacher Education via distance education, is also a contender for the Australian Winter Olympics team.
The 22-year-old will travel to Trentino, Italy, in December to compete in cross country skiing at the 2013 Winter
World University Games, following his silver medal at the Australian University Snow Sports Championships at Thredbo, NSW, in August.
Having recently completed a 10-day training trip to Sweden, the World University Games has been high on Mr Bellingham's list of priorities, and following this event, his sights will be set on the next Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
"My main goals now are to qualify for, and do well in, the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games," he said on his
blog.
Mr Bellingham's current status on the Australian Olympic Team website is 'hopeful'.
If selected, he will compete in the 15-kilometre and sprint freestyle events in Sochi, which is on the coast of the Black Sea close to the border with Georgia.
Selection for the Australian team will be made before the end of January next year.
CSU Student Support team leader Mr Nik Granger said the University was proudly supporting Mr Bellingham's efforts.
"The University Games are a highlight of the student year at Charles Sturt University, and to have one of our students go on to represent us at the world games is fantastic," he said.
"Our focus here has always been on supporting our students to participate in activities and reap the benefits of competing, including the camaraderie and friendships that go with that.
"Phillip's example shows you can take that spirit into competition at the highest levels, and we're all following his progress closely. He's got a lot of support here.
"I'm sure all the students and staff of Charles Sturt University wish him every success, and I have no doubt he'll continue to represent us with all the determination and sportsmanship he has shown throughout his career."
The Winter World University Games will be held in Trentino, Italy, from 11 to 21 December.
