Charles Sturt University's long and proud history in nursing education is set to continue at the Dubbo Campus with the Bachelor of Nursing pre-registration course to be offered from next year.

The University will offer the full-time course at the Dubbo campus with an initial intake of 25 students.

The course is the result of research from CSU's Faculty of Health Studies which uncovered a need within the Dubbo and Orana region to provide improved health care training, according to Faculty Dean Professor David Batterbsy.

"The establishment of this course at the Dubbo campus is a significant commitment by the University particularly at a time when the university sector is under enormous funding pressure," he said.

"The decision reflects the importance to the University of initiatives and developments at the Dubbo Campus."

The NSW Nurses Registration Board signalled its intention to work closely with the University in the developing the nursing course with a representative to sit on a local advisory committee assisting the implementation of the course. "The course has only just been advertised and listed on the University's web site and already we have received more than 70 enquiries from potential students in the Dubbo region both from school leavers and others seeking a career change. Employment prospects in nursing are very good at the moment", says Professor Battersby.

Senior staff from the Faculty of Health Studies will be at CSU's Dubbo Campus, Myall Street on Wednesday 21 July to meet with local health professionals and community leaders to discuss how CSU might respond to the various education, training and research needs in the field of health in the region.
