With the first round of university offers released yesterday, Charles Sturt University (CSU) is pleased with the interest shown in courses at its newest campus in Port Macquarie.
Following federal government funding announced in December, CSU has begun developing its campus in Grant Street, Port Macquarie, to serve the Mid-North Coast region.
As Dean of Studies Professor Ken Dillon explains, CSU is working in conjunction with North Coast Institute of TAFE to respond to long-held community concerns about access and participation in higher education for students of the region.
“Our vision is to grow our presence in Port Macquarie to around 5000 students by 2030 and offer a diverse range of programs in health, science, education, creative industries and business,” Professor Dillon said.
“We’re encouraged by the initial applications for our courses, particularly in the area of social work in which we’re confident of enrolling 30 students.
“There are still places left in health and rehabilitation science and in accounting and we’re looking forward to welcoming students into these courses when the academic year begins in February.”
For those students who do not receive an offer into their chosen university course, Professor Dillon reminded students that there are many pathways into university study.
“For example, students can study a combination of TAFE and CSU subjects in the Diploma of General Studies that not only prepares them for University study but also guarantees entry into many CSU degree programs, with credit in some cases.
“It’s important for students and parents to talk with universities so all options for tertiary study are explored.”
Professor Dillon said CSU is committed to expanding educational opportunities for students in the area and ensuring a supply of skilled professionals to meet the needs of regional employers and industry.
“Whether students choose to study with us in Port Macquarie, at another regional campus or via distance education, their student experience and preparation for the workforce are paramount considerations for the University.
“We look forward to welcoming our first crop of commencing students in Port Macquarie with orientation activities and information sessions in February, and have recruited into all campus positions to ensure we’re ready to hit the ground running.”
