On arrival in Australia, animal scientist Mr Jacob Kuusu was described as an ambassador for Nigeria but he is now also a firm advocate for Charles Sturt University (CSU).

Mr Jacob Kuusu and his wife Beatrice at CSU.Mr Kuusu is one of five postgraduate students welcomed to CSU at the start of 2014 after they secured Australia Awards Scholarships from the Federal Government.

Based at CSU in Wagga Wagga, the former high school teacher and livestock development officer is completing a Master of Animal Science through the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences.

Mr Kuusu hails from a minority tribe, the Tiv, whose people live in several states around the north central region of Nigeria with the majority in Benue state.

He said he was 'elated' to learn that he had secured one of the prized Australia Awards Scholarships, formerly known as AusAID Scholarships.

"Studying abroad was a dream I conceived right from childhood. But I never had an idea of how it would turn to reality until I was awarded the scholarship," Mr Kuusu said.

"My people back in my home country are predominantly peasant farmers who produce crops and animals largely on a subsistence basis. Hence, studying animal science in Australia offers me a big opportunity to contribute to the society in the improvement of livestock production.

Mr Kuusu says the city of Wagga Wagga boasts an incredible multicultural academic environment which makes it perfect for study.

"Charles Sturt University has satisfied my expectations of an academic environment where every student is expected and motivated to excel with sound teaching methods. Student welfare is a priority for every member of staff," he said.

"I have already acquired a lot that I would impart to other people upon completion and return back to Nigeria. Charles Sturt University has further stimulated my desire for more knowledge which I hope to contribute to my country's livestock sector.

"I would strongly recommend this University to anyone who wishes to study in Australia because of the quality of education available and the multicultural international representation which will help in faster integration and experience.

"I have also found the University's facilities and infrastructure that I have never seen in my life before. It is the first place where I have found constant and highly effective internet services. The University accommodation is awe-inspiring; very few institutions back home in Nigeria have such facilities, and only the highly placed afford such for their children and wards.

"Charles Sturt University is not only a dream come true; to me it is a home away from home."
