Government agencies in Indonesia and Singapore are set to benefit from degree courses developed by Charles Sturt University (CSU) in policing and emergency management.

 

The Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation (JCLEC) and CSU re-signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on academic cooperation earlier in September at the Indonesian Police Academy, Semarang in central Java, Indonesia, that will concentrate on CSU offering policing degrees and postgraduate courses through the JCLEC.

 

“CSU has already worked with JCLEC to provide training on the management of complex multi-jurisdictional investigations into transnational crimes, with an initial focus on combating terrorism,” said Associate Dean of Faculty of Arts, Professor Tracey Green. CSU and JCLEC sponsor scholarships for students to complete the Graduate Certificate in Terrorism, Safety and Security developed by CSU.  Successful students can then enrol in a Graduate Certificate or Masters degree in the same subject.

 

Further cooperation includes collaboration on research projects and programs; the organisation of joint academic and scientific activities such as short courses, conferences, seminars and lectures; and the articulation of JCLEC students into CSU programs, which are offered through CSU’s Faculty of Arts via face-to-face and distance education.

 

The Centre has been developed in partnership with Australian Federal Police and aims to provide training for police across South East Asia.

 

“CSU already has a student from JCLEC’s terrorism program undertaking a graduate certificate and two more scholarships are being offered this year. We hope to enrol more students from South East Asia in these distance education courses,” said senior CSU policing academic, Associate Professor Nick O’Brien.

 

CSU has also recently signed an MOU with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), which will see two CSU courses offered to SCDF staff: the Master of Arts (Fire Investigation) and Bachelor of Social Science (Emergency Management), which can both be studied via distance education.
