Representatives from Charles Sturt University (CSU) and the NSW Police Force will join with the NSW Deputy Premier, Minister for Trade and Investment and Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Services, the Hon. Andrew Stoner, to welcome 100 officers from the Indian Police Service (IPS), the third group to take part in an international training program.
The Mid-Career Training Programme, funded by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, exposes middle level IPS officers to international policing theory and practice that will help them meet current and future challenges facing policing in India.
“As crime becomes increasingly transnational, so must policing. This program highlights international collaboration as the police forces of India and Australia share their knowledge and experience,” said Associate Professor Tracey Green, CSU’s Associate Dean of Policing.
.
Around 350 IPS officers have taken part in the training program over three years, which Professor Green said, “contributes to the development of India’s future senior leadership cadre as well as developing democratic policing systems and maintaining security in the wider Asian region”.
“We are proud to help develop the capacity and capability of the Indian Police Service to protect its communities and meet the ever-increasing expectations of a rapidly developing nation,” Professor Green said.
“Improved international practices and greater professional partnerships will help counter transnational crime in the region, while enabling informal networks of police to assist international cooperation between countries to develop shared objectives in reducing crime.
“Charles Sturt University also aims to further improve collaboration between academia and international policing, improve knowledge sharing and develop integrated international approaches to research and teaching in policing and wider security issues.”
The first six weeks of the training program were held earlier this year at the IPS National Police Academy in Hyderabad, India. CSU presenters were joined by the NSW Police Force, the Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police and international experts to share their considerable knowledge and experience and motivate participants to reach their full leadership potential.
The current Australian tour follows on from the officers’ studies in India. During the next two weeks they will visit policing and law enforcement facilities in NSW, the ACT and Victoria, including CSU’s School of Policing Studies and the NSW Police Academy in Goulburn,
Charles Sturt University is at the forefront of police education in Australia. Every police recruit in NSW is trained by the NSW Police Force in collaboration with CSU at the Goulburn Police Academy.
