Stargazing students can gain a greater understanding of outer space in a new subject offered by Charles Sturt University (CSU).

Dr Ernest anticipates the subject will be of interest to those studying CSU arts, education and science courses.
“It will also be suitable for any students requiring an additional subject to complete their degree, or even as a non-degree subject for anyone from the general public interested in astronomy.”
Dr Ernest said the subject includes both theoretical and practical aspects of astronomy.
“Students will gain a better understanding of our solar system, the structure of galaxies and the life and death of stars.
“Starting with Indigenous and archeo-astronomy involving other Ancient civilisations, the subject will cover most areas of modern astronomy and will be largely descriptive rather than mathematical,” he said. “Astrobiology and cosmology will also be covered.”
In practical sessions students will use telescopes and computer methods to become familiar with observational techniques while participating in astronomical data collection and image processing.
Introduction to Astronomy will be offered from July for study on campus in Wagga Wagga or by distance education.
