Science @ CSU celebrations

Public science experiments and free screenings from the national travelling science film festival, SCINEMA 2011 are all part of National Science Week celebrations at CSU.

Public science experiments and free screenings from the national travelling science film festival, SCINEMA 2011 are all part of National Science Week celebrations at Charles Sturt University (CSU).
 
Professor Nick Klomp, Dean of the Faculty of Science at CSU. In free, public simultaneous events at CSU in Albury-Wodonga, Orange and Wagga Wagga on Wednesday 17 August, experiments will be conducted by scientists followed by films from SCINEMA 2011.
 
The events include:
  • CSU in Albury-Wodonga:
    In the CD Blake Lecture Theatre off Elizabeth Mitchell Drive, Thurgoona, there will be drinks and nibbles from 6pm to 6.30pm. The Dean of the University’s Faculty of Science Professor Nick Klomp will then host a public activity with the Astronomical Society of Albury Wodonga on star gazing in an inflatable planetarium. At 7pm, the film from SCINEMA 2011, Voyage of the Planets will be shown. The event will close at 8pm. Members of the public are encouraged to attend.
  • CSU in Orange:
    The doors of lecture theatre 3 at CSU in Orange will open at 6pm with light refreshments available. From 6.30pm, Dr Scott Andrew and Dr Yann Guisard from the University’s Faculty of Science will work on strawberry DNA in a public experiment. At 7pm, the film Immortal from SCINEMA 2011 will be screened. The event will close at 8pm. The public is welcome to attend. Read more here.  
  • CSU in Wagga Wagga:
    In the Wal Fife Lecture Theatres in building 14 at CSU in Wagga Wagga, light refreshments will be served from 6pm. From 6.30pm, Dr Dan Bedgood and Dr Celia Barril from the University’s Faculty of Science will present the experiment, Antioxidants in your drinks. At 7pm the film from SCINEMA 2011, Waste Not, will be screened. The event will finish at 8pm. The public is welcome to attend.
“An event like National Science Week is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate our science and create discussion about everyday science within the community. Science can actually be very simple and easy to relate to if explained adequately, and that’s what we aim to achieve with these events,” said Lecturer with the University’s Faculty of Science Dr Celia Barril.
 
National Science Week is being held from Saturday 13 August to 21 August, and 2011 is also International Year of the Chemistry. The events have been organised by Science @ CSU.
