The Council, staff and students of Charles Sturt University are saddened by the death of Mr Peter Andren, the Independent member for the former Federal electorate of Calare which included CSU’s Bathurst and Orange Campuses.

The President and Vice-Chancellor of CSU, Professor Ian Goulter, today paid tribute to Mr Andren, saying his contribution to national politics will be remembered and his presence missed.

“Mr Andren served his electorate and the people of Australia with vigour and integrity,” Professor Goulter said.

“He was a great supporter of Charles Sturt University and higher education because of his belief in the value of universities to Australian society.

“Our thoughts are with Mr Andren’s family at this time, and we offer our sincere condolences to them.”

Mr Andren was elected to the House of Representatives in the Federal Parliament in 1996 and increased his primary vote at each successive election. Following a recent change to the electoral boundaries, Mr Andren announced his intention to stand for the Senate representing NSW. He subsequently decided not to stand following his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer.
