Focus on local communities a major step forward: CSU expert

A CSU researcher has hailed the focus on direct engagement with Murray Darling Basin communities, as highlighted in the draft Murray Darling Basin Plan released by the Murray Darling Basin Authority, as a step in the right direction.

A Charles Sturt University (CSU) researcher has hailed the focus on direct engagement with Murray Darling Basin communities, as highlighted in the draft Murray Darling Basin Plan released on Monday 28 November by the Murray Darling Basin Authority, as a step in the right direction.

“A focus on local communities is an important philosophical shift. It has the potential to change the water debate from a simplistic environment versus irrigation divide that promotes conflict, to a future vision for rural Australia that would promote cooperation,” said Ms Anna Lukasiewicz, a social researcher with CSU’s Institute for Land, Water and Society.

“The latest assessment of water reforms by the National Water Commission also promotes the strengthening of community engagement.”

Ms Lukasiewicz believed this shift is important for social justice.

“All people should feel their social status is recognised. Many rural communities currently feel that they are ignored, unappreciated and misunderstood. Putting the focus on local communities can potentially be a way of granting rural landholders recognition and respect.

“Aboriginal communities still find it hard to be heard in the water debate. Focusing on local communities can potentially give them a voice.”

The community focus is also important for the scientists.

“To regain legitimacy in the eyes of communities in the Basin, scientists must acknowledge the wealth of local knowledge held by rural communities. Exploring local solutions for local water problems will acknowledge and use their knowledge of the local environment,” she said.
