Charles Sturt University (CSU) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Goulter, today congratulated three of the University’s staff on the announcement that they were nominated for the 2007 NSW Woman of the Year award.

Charles Sturt University (CSU) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Goulter, today congratulated three of the University’s staff on the announcement that they were nominated for the 2007 NSW Woman of the Year award.

The nominees were Ms Jan Hudson (Bathurst Campus), CSU's Stakeholder and Community Relations Consultant in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Margaret Alston (Wagga Wagga Campus), Professor of Social Work and Human Services and Director, Centre for Rural Social Research, and Ms Kerry Grigg, a lecturer in the School of Business and Information Technology at CSU’s Albury-Wodonga Campus. They were nominated by their respective members of parliament.

The NSW Woman of the Year is presented annually by the NSW government to mark International Women’s Day. Ms Hudson, Professor Alston, Ms Grigg and other nominees from around NSW attended the award function with the NSW Governor, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, AC on Thursday 8 March at Government House in Sydney.

“CSU is very proud to have these three outstanding contributors to the advancement of the quality of life of inland NSW, and I extend our sincere congratulations on behalf of the whole CSU community,” Professor Goulter said. “To have one nominee is excellent, but to have three nominees from three CSU campuses in the same year is simply outstanding.

“These nominations are well deserved, and we are delighted with the wider recognition of the nominees’ social and academic achievements which make significant contributions to the welfare of people living in regional and rural communities,” he said.

"Ms Hudson has built and strengthened CSU’s relationship with our local communities across inland NSW. Jan has raised the level of support for CSU's student scholarships, significantly increased philanthropic activities, and as a mentor generously gives her time and skills to guide and develop other women as future leaders for our communities.

“Ms Grigg was nominated for her work co-ordinating ‘children’s choice’ to make pre-school affordable to all parents. Kerry has earned the respect of her colleagues through teaching Marketing and Management at CSU, studying for a PhD and raising a young family of five children.

“Professor Alston is a leading contributor to rural social research and to the many discussions and debates related to the wellbeing of the people of inland Australia. Her contribution will be long lasting,” Professor Goulter said.

International Women’s Day (IWD) recognises the achievements of women and the leadership that women provide worldwide. All NSW Government ministers and MPs can nominate a woman for the IWD NSW Woman of the Year award. Ms Hudson was nominated by Mr Gerard Martin, MP, Bathurst; Professor Alston was nominated by Mr Daryl Maguire, MP, Wagga Wagga; and Ms Grigg was nominated by Mr Greg Aplin, MP, Albury. The 2007 award’s theme - Valuing Difference / Leading Change - encompasses the range of achievements of women in NSW.
