A
demonstrated passion for the Australian sheep and wool industry has secured a
national scholarship for Charles Sturt University (CSU) student Ms Casey Annetts.
Ms Annetts, a third year Bachelor of Agricultural Business Management student at CSU in Wagga Wagga, has been named a joint winner of the 2015 Peter Westblade Scholarship, along with Mr Jayden Harris, from Brimanna Poll Merino in South Australia.
They have each been awarded cash and in-kind support valued at up to $10 000.
Ms Annetts said, "I believe my passion in the sheep and wool sector is shaped by persistence, dedication and action.
"In addition to my Charles Sturt University studies, I am involved with many field days focusing on both meat and wool objectives and I have joined industry groups to keep up to date."
As part of her degree, Ms Annetts has completed work placements with two wool brokers and assisted with research trials in NSW to gain practical skills.
"I aspire to 'make more from sheep'. I want to act as a link or communicator for extension services in the sector," said Ms Annetts who is based in the CSU School of Agricultural and Wine Sciences.
"I am looking forward to my career in the sheep and wool sector.
"I plan to use the Scholarship to gain further mentoring experiences, develop my sheep and wool education and take advantage of networking opportunities.
"I will also use it to become an ambassador for the progression of people in the sheep and wool industry, to encourage students and those younger than me to gain experience themselves.
"This will provide me the ultimate feeling of accomplishment."
Lecturer in agricultural systems, Dr Alison Southwell said, "Casey is a deserving recipient of this award and the experience and contacts she will gain from being involved in the mentoring program will help her reach her goals. It's great to see industry leaders throwing their support behind the young people who will shape the industry into the future."
The Scholarship was established to honour the late Peter Westblade, a visionary sheep producer from Lockhart in the Riverina region of NSW.
The annual Scholarship aims to 'promote the practical skills associated with the sheep and wool industry and aims to deliver hands on experience to young people aspiring for a career' in industry.
