A Charles Sturt University (CSU) agricultural business management student has a long term vision for improving the supply chain management of sheep and wool from paddock to consumer.
A wool and sheep specialist with Australian Wool Network,
Mr Greg Sawyer is a Master
of Agricultural Business Management student in the School of Agricultural and
Wine Sciences at CSU in Orange.
Working throughout western and central NSW, Mr Sawyer has been awarded a scholarship by the Australian Wool Education Trust to help him with his postgraduate studies.
The 2015 AWET Masters by Coursework Scholarship is valued $6 000, of which half goes to CSU to support Mr Swayer in his studies.
His postgraduate studies will focus in subject areas like supply chain management, wool and meat science along with e-business for the food and fibre sector.
Mr Sawyer will also undertake a Masters project focusing on the supply chains in the more remote grazing areas.
"Through my studies I'm interacting with like-minded people who are passionate about food and fibre sustainability and various marketing methods," he said.
"The pastoral zone is close to my heart having previously lived in the area and I continue to work with many in the area to maximise their returns through various supply chain initiatives.
"At the end of my degree, I will have practical skills I have acquired through my career but also the theoretical knowledge that reflect my skills and practice.
"I enjoy studying by distance education as the resources are interactive, modern and internet based which provides me with the ability to be flexible in my study during my busy life."
Mr Sawyer sits on an industry advisory panel and is also involved events such as the AWI National Merino Challenge and NSW High Schools Wether Challenge, to help young people develop their knowledge of the sheep industry.
He is also part of CSU's meat judging team which will compete at the Intercollegiate Meat Judging Competition to be held in Wagga Wagga in July.
Course Director in the School of Agricultural and Wine Sciences at Orange Dr Yann Guisard said, "It was a pleasure to support Greg's application with Australian Wool Education Trust.
"His success in securing this scholarship demonstrates that Charles Sturt University students are worthy of the most prestigious rewards. It also demonstrates our relevance and excellence in sheep business management.
"The Master of Agricultural Business Management has been described in the past as an MBA in Agriculture. That is exactly the range of skills required for a project such as that undertaken by Greg."
