Traditional city-country rivalry on the rugby field will take on a new twist with a friendly wager between the Vice-Chancellors of Charles Sturt University and the University of Sydney.

The Charles Sturt University NSW Country Eagles will play the University of Sydney backed Sydney Stars in round 7 of the National Rugby Championship, at Leichardt Oval at 3pm on Monday 6 October.

CSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Vann and the University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence have agreed that the winning University's flag will be flown from the flagpole of the other University in the week following the game.

"There's always friendly competition when city and country come together but our universities share a common goal of producing graduates who excel in all aspects of their lives -academic, sporting and cultural," Professor Vann said.

"Charles Sturt University is proud to fly the flag for country New South Wales, whether that's providing opportunities for regional and remote students to access higher education, supporting our local communities and training professionals for the regions.

"No doubt it will be a spirited rugby match but I'm hoping to see our flag flying high at Sydney University."

The NSW Country Eagles sit third on the National Rugby Championship points table after three wins and two losses while the Sydney Stars will be keen to post their first win.
