CSU and Bathurst Regional Council agree to court business and industry

1 JANUARY 2003

Charles Sturt University and Bathurst Regional Council will agree to develop strategies to attract new business and industry to the region when representatives of both organisations sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding on Monday.

Charles Sturt University (CSU) and Bathurst Regional Council (BRC) will agree to develop strategies to attract new business and industry to the region when representatives of both organisations sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday.

“This is a significant development in the long and productive relationship between the University and the Bathurst region,” said Professor Ian Goulter, CSU Vice-Chancellor.

“At a time when inland Australia is under increasing pressure due to crippling drought conditions, an agreement such as this will strengthen our voice in working for the future needs of the region.

“We will develop strategies to attract new business and industry, and this includes opportunities for research, internships and work opportunities for CSU students,” Professor Goulter said.

“We also want to develop strategies to attract third party funding to develop joint infrastructure, and develop mutually beneficial internship and employment opportunities for CSU students and graduates with Bathurst Council in areas in which CSU delivers programs.

“This includes development of student scholarships and research grants in areas relevant to CSU that support the needs of rural communities.

“Both parties aim to develop community education and business training programs to meet the needs of local government staff and the regional communities. We will also cooperate to promote CSU and Council events, particularly in the media,” Professor Goulter said.

Bathurst Regional Council Mayor Norm Mann said the signing of this Memorandum confirms Council's and the University's commitment to working together.

“In identifying future growth opportunities for the region, this agreement also provides a framework for the creation of separate formal partnerships in the future, with a Cultural Services agreement already being worked upon.”

Associate Professor Tom Watson, Acting Head of CSU’s Bathurst Campus and Head of the School of Communication said “The Memorandum of Understanding shows that the relationship between Bathurst Regional Council and Charles Sturt University is moving on to a higher and stronger plane of cooperation. There are mutual benefits for both organisations and to the regional community which will make Bathurst and the surrounding Central West economically and educationally stronger. That’s good news for everyone.”

The MoU will be signed by Professor Goulter and Councillor Norm Mann at 12 noon on Monday 6 November at the Australian Mineral and Fossil Museum, Howick St Bathurst.

CSU has similar collaborative agreements with regional councils at Albury-Wodonga, Dubbo, Orange and Wagga Wagga.
