Two Charles Sturt University (CSU) students in Wagga Wagga have been earmarked as future leaders in the international cattle industry by securing competitive scholarships to attend a major beef conference in Canada.
Bachelor of Agricultural Science student Mr Sam Hand and Bachelor of Animal Science student Ms Elizabeth McClymont have been awarded bursaries to attend the Beef 2013: International Livestock Conference in Calgary, Alberta.
They are among 20 Canadian and international students who successfully secured support from the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) and the International Stockman’s Education Foundation to attend the Congress on Wednesday 10 July.
In addition to the Congress, where they will hear about issues facing the cattle industry and network with industry leaders, the students will also go to the Grandstand Show at the Calgary Stampede.
Professor of Animal Science Peter Wynn from the University’s School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences said, “This conference in Calgary provides students with the unique opportunity to share experiences with fellow agricultural and animal science students from around the globe as well as gaining an insight into the Canadian beef industry, which is one of the most advanced in the world.”
Mr Hand, from Taralga on the NSW Southern Tablelands, said, “I am very keen to learn about commercial livestock production in North America, both its successes and its challenges, to see if these are shared by Australia.”
Ms McClymont, from Goondiwindi in Queensland, said,"I am very thankful to have been given this opportunity to attend the International Livestock Congress student program.
“I believe this experience will extend my awareness and knowledge of the livestock industry on a global scale and will also give me the opportunity to network with other like-minded people who share my passion for the industry.”
