Big CSU team for University Games

CSU will field its largest ever team for the Eastern University Games to be held in Wagga Wagga next month. The 352-member CSU team will compete in 16 sports at the Games from Sunday 5 to Thursday 9 July.

The 352-member CSU team will compete in 16 sports at the  Games from Sunday 5 to Thursday 9 July.

CSU manager of student engagement, Mr Niklaus Granger said, "Charles Sturt University will be represented by 31 teams and another 13 individual athletes, our largest ever team.

"For the first time we'll field teams in men's volleyball, indoor cricket and mixed oz-tag.

"Students studying at Bathurst, Wagga Wagga, Port Macquarie, Orange and Albury-Wodonga, along with some who study by Distance Education, will take part."

The pressure is on the CSU team to claim top spot on the leader board after Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Vann pledged to fly the overall winning team's flag over the University at the conclusion of the Games.

Mr Granger said CSU has a good chance in a number of events.

"The number one lawn bowls team is strong, boasting Victorian state representative and elite athlete, Ms Kylie Whitehead, as well as two students who have previously help Charles Sturt University win the Australian Uni Games Gold medal," he said.

"The women's touch football team also has number of girls who have played at representative level."

A number of CSU students will also take part as volunteers at the event which is expected to attract more than 3 000 competitors from university and TAFE in NSW and the ACT.

The Games will be hosted by CSU in partnership with the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, and Wagga Wagga City Council.

Sport will be played at CSU, Robertson Oval, Rawlings, Jubilee, Paramore and Bolton parks, local high schools, Jim Elphick Tennis Centre and Wagga Bowling Centre.

CSU Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Ken Dillon will speak at the EUG opening ceremony from 6:30pm on Sunday 5 July at the Murrumbidgee Turf Club, Travers Street, Wagga Wagga.

Organised by Australian University Sport (AUS), the Games serve as the qualifying competition for many teams aiming to secure a place at the national Australian University Games on the Gold Coast from Sunday 27 September to Friday 2 October.
