Charles
Sturt University (CSU) education student Miss Olivia Patterson has been
selected for the Australian Universities Women's Rugby Sevens team and will
compete at the national tournament next month.
The Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education) student was selected for the Uni Joeys squad after an impressive performance at the Australian University Games in 2014.
"I'm excited to be a part of this team and have the opportunity to participate not only at nationals but to be a part of the world game as well," Miss Patterson said.
Selectors will be out in force at the Australian Rugby Union National Sevens tournament as they develop the squad for the Rio Olympics. This will be Miss Patterson's first opportunity to impress Olympic selectors.
"The tournament is quite nerve-wracking for me considering I've only played a few games and it's against the top girls in the country," she said.
"But I don't think we've really got anything to lose. For me, I just want to play hard and have fun. We know there will be Australian selectors watching but I'm not really thinking about that."
Manager of Student Engagement Mr Niklaus Granger will be the Uni Joey Team Manager for the tournament and is excited to see the development of CSU athletes.
"It's wonderful to see Charles Sturt University students playing rugby Sevenss at a national level and having the opportunity to be selected for Rio," Mr Granger said.
"To be selected to play at this level is a great achievement and we're looking forward to seeing Olivia play at the tournament."
CSU will be financially assisting Miss Patterson to attend the tournament which will be held on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 March 2015 at the Sydney Academy of Sport in Narrabeen.
