Charles Sturt University (CSU) will feature in the Wagga Mardi Gras this weekend as a major sponsor in the inaugural event.

Around 100 CSU students, staff and alumni will participate in the parade to demonstrate the University’s commitment to inclusion and the expression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) identity and pride.

The University float has been built to to reflect CSU values: Insightful, Impactful, Inspiring and Inclusive.

CSU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Vann said that CSU is proud to support the LGBTIQ+ community, crediting the work of the University’s Ally LGBTIQ+ network – a group of trained staff and students, proudly supporting sexuality, sex and gender diversity will lead the CSU float on Saturday.

“This group of individuals have put in a tremendous effort to plan and generate CSU’s involvement for the weekend ahead.” Professor Vann said.

Professor Vann, who will be sporting a rainbow suit on the CSU float, said that it will be an opportunity to highlight the University's inclusive culture.

“One of CSU’s core values is ‘inclusive,’ and that’s not simply a word to us,” Professor Vann said.

“We welcome and support students and staff from all backgrounds and value the diversity all individuals bring to our community.

“We aim to make our University an inclusive environment for all.” Professor Vann said.

CSU Student Equity and Diversity Officer, Carissa Perkins (pictured) who has been the project manager for CSU's role in the event, said it will be an opportunity to highlight the University’s supportive environment.

“A lot of people in CSU’s footprint  might be questioning their sex, sexuality or gender identity and not feel like there is much support to rally around them. We want them to know that however they identify and wherever they are on their journey is ok, and we are here for them.”

“We welcome and support those from all backgrounds and value the diversity each individual brings to our community."

And what better way to celebrate diversity than a CSU float paraded down Bayliss Street in Wagga, featuring plenty of fun, colour and glitter.” Ms Perkins said.

The parade will take place on Saturday, March 9, down Wagga Wagga’s main strip, Baylis Street at 5pm, followed by a free after party at Victory Memorial Gardens.
