Charles Sturt University welcomes the allocation of new Commonwealth supported university places announced by the Federal Minister for Education, Science and Training Dr Brendan Nelson.

Charles Sturt University (CSU) welcomes the allocation of new Commonwealth supported university places announced by the Federal Minister for Education, Science and Training Dr Brendan Nelson last Friday.

“While we are still awaiting further information from the Minister and his Department, the preliminary advice to CSU indicates that around 700 new, fully-funded places will be available for the University’s main campuses in Albury-Wodonga, Wagga Wagga, Bathurst and Dubbo for the period 2005 to 2008,” CSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Goulter said.

“These new places will meet some of the demand for our courses in the health sciences, nursing, social welfare, business and middle school and secondary teacher education as well as provide opportunities for further articulation with TAFE which we particularly welcome,” he said.

More than 36 per cent of the new places or 3 292 places were allocated to NSW and the ACT universities.

“Over half of our undergraduate on campus students come to us from our regions so the growth in fully-funded places at CSU is important to allow our regions to grow, prosper and develop,” Professor Goulter said.

The announcements last Friday by Dr Brendan Nelson also included the allocation of new places to CSU for the Orange Campus, which is currently part of the University of Sydney.

“We intend to have formal discussions with the University of Sydney about the Orange campus once we have received written advice from Dr Nelson about this matter,” Professor Goulter said.

“We expect to receive correspondence from the Minister about the Orange campus this week,” he added.
