Charles Sturt University (CSU) will celebrate the reward for years of toil embodied in degrees, diplomas and certificates to be awarded to 2 168 graduands.
The University will hold six ceremonies in Wagga Wagga, which will be swept up in happy celebration as families and friends gather to acknowledge the graduands achievements.

A special moment in the lives of husband and wife team of Geoff Currie and Doctor Janelle Wheat during Charles Sturt University (CSU) Graduations commencing Wednesday 18 April. Both are CSU lecturers, working in the same discipline area of nuclear medicine. Both completed their studies while working full time and raising two children. Janelle’s professional doctorate speaks for itself, including 18 peer reviewed journal articles, 11 international publications, seven national publications, and two research excellence awards (1 international and 1 national). Mr Currie’s PhD is just as impressive, with 11 peer reviewed journal articles, eight international publications, three national publications one international research excellence award.

2006 Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence – Joint Winners
Charles Sturt University (CSU) is conducting strategic and applied research of an international standard through work being carried out by two international researchers, who have made inland Australia their home. Professor Lexin Wang (from China) and Professor Shahbaz Khan (from Pakistan) are the joint winners of the 2006 Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence. Over the past four years Professor Wang’s growing contribution to research, specifically in the field of cardiovascular science and medicine, has been recognised nationally and internationally. Since joining CSU in 2004, Professor Khan’s cross disciplinary water research has resulted in collaboration between CSU and six CSIRO divisions, providing key input into numerous cross organisational projects. Professor Khan’s applied research has earned him the trust of Australian irrigators, with his expertise recognised both nationally and internationally.

CSU honours Wagga Wagga’s Geoffrey Dixon
Qantas Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Geoffrey Dixon will be honoured by Charles Sturt University (CSU) with the conferral of an Honorary Doctor of Business (honoris causa) during 2006 Graduation Ceremonies commencing on Wednesday 18 April. Geoffrey James Dixon was born and raised in Wagga Wagga, attending Wagga Wagga High School from 1952 to 1955. He was appointed CEO and Managing Director of Qantas Airlines in March 2001. In 2006 The Bulletin magazine named Mr Dixon as one of the 20 most influential business leaders in Australia. He has received numerous awards in recognition of his professional and community efforts. The CSU doctorate, to be awarded on Friday 20 April during Information Studies Graduation at the Wagga Wagga Campus, recognises Mr Dixon’s contribution to the Australian airline and tourism industries and champion of community initiatives, particularly in regional areas.

A long education journey ends
Ten international graduands will travel from Cambodia to Wagga Wagga in regional NSW to take part in 2006 Charles Sturt University (CSU) Graduation Ceremonies commencing on Wednesday 18 April. The former students completed studies with CSU under an international study partnership with the Cambodian based Economics and Finance Institute and will graduate with degrees in Master Business Administration from the CSU Faculty of Business. The Cambodian graduands will receive their degrees at 2.30 pm on Thursday 19 April at Joyes Hall, before attending a faculty graduation dinner. Other overseas students, including two from Malaysia are also expected to attend CSU Graduation ceremonies which run over three days, concluding on Friday 20 April.
John Mahon - Companion of the University
John Mahon graduated with a Diploma in Agriculture from the Wagga Agricultural College in 1962, beginning an on-going association with the Charles Sturt University (CSU), to be recognised with the conferring of the award Companion of the University. Mr Mahon was the main instigator of the fundraising effort for WACOBU cottage, the postgraduate accommodation complex which opened in 1996, the centenary year of agricultural education at Wagga Wagga. His expertise on the WACOBU committee and his wide industry knowledge led to his nomination for other University committees over many years. Mr Mahon continues to be a major contributor to CSU, being involved in scholarship funding to the Charles Sturt Foundation. His commitment to the people of the region continues unabated, demonstrating a commitment and dedication to this University and its region.
