24 NOVEMBER 2003

The 2004 academic year will commence at Charles Sturt University (CSU) with a change in the line-up of the Heads of Campuses as CSU works to further enhance its ties with its regions.

Professor Gail Whiteford is the new Head of the Albury-Wodonga Campus, while there have been re-appointments for the three other main campuses at Bathurst and Dubbo and Wagga Wagga [see Extra notes].

Professor Bob Meyenn will lead the Bathurst Campus, Professor David Battersby the Dubbo Campus and Professor David Green has been reappointed to the Wagga Wagga Campus.

“Our philosophy is of “One University” but CSU is the richer for our diverse campus communities and the distinctive regions they embrace,” said CSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Goulter.

The Head of Campus appointments follow the launch in October of an initiative that will see the University strengthen its links with the regions, including the formation of regional consultative committees to advise the University on issues and potential opportunities for development.

“How we relate to our communities is integral to our success as a University. The Heads of Campus will have an active role in how we work with our communities, business and industry in helping to foster growth and development and enhance CSU’s service delivery,” said Professor Goulter.

“This is always going to be a two-way process. CSU’s success is intrinsically linked with the growth and development of the region.”

In announcing the appointments, Professor Goulter said all of the Heads of Campus hold senior positions in the University as well as being leaders in their own fields.

Heads of Campus appointments from 1 January 2004:

  • Albury-Wodonga Campus: Albury-Wodonga Campus: Professor Gail Whiteford, Director of the Centre for Research into Professional Practice, Learning and Education (RIPPLE).  Professor Whiteford was formerly the Head of the School of Community Health and is an experienced manager and health researcher having worked in occupational therapy [see Extra notes].
  • Bathurst Campus: Professor Bob Meyenn, Dean of the Faculty of Education. Professor Meyenn is currently acting Head of the Bathurst Campus. He carries a number of key positions on Ministerial and Government advisory committees on education and is also Chair of Australian Volunteers International.
  • Dubbo Campus: Professor David Battersby, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration). Professor Battersby is a member of the University’s senior executive group. Prior to this he was Dean of the Faculty of Health Studies at CSU.
  • Wagga Wagga Campus: Professor David Green, Chair of the CSU Academic Senate. Professor Green has played a key role in the development of the Arts both at CSU and in regional Australia. He is also well known for his work as a visual artist.

Extra notes on new Head of Campus in Albury-Wodonga

Senior Charles Sturt University academic and director of a leading collaborative research centre, Professor Gail Whiteford, has been appointed as the new Head of CSU’s Albury-Wodonga Campus, to commence on 1 January 2004.

Professor Whiteford, Director of the CSU Centre for Research into Professional Practice, Learning and Education (RIPPLE) and former Head of the School of Community Health, based on the Albury City Campus, has an international profile in occupational therapy and as a health researcher particularly in regard to rural health provision.

“Professor Whiteford takes up this high profile position at a most important time for the University and the Albury-Wodonga Campus.” CSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Goulter said in announcing the new Heads of Campus appointees.

“As Head of Campus Professor Whiteford will be actively working with the Albury- Wodonga, southern NSW and north east Victoria region

Professor Goulter noted that it was a particularly exciting time for Albury-Wodonga, with the $20 million building program announced in August for the Thurgoona Campus and new courses in teaching and health sciences, announced last February, to start in 2004.

“The Campus has an exciting future. All of the foundations are in place for its ongoing strategic development and growth. We welcome Professor Whiteford in her new role with the University as it seeks to further develop its engagement with regional NSW and Victoria,” Professor Goulter said.

Professor Goulter went on to thank Professor David Battersby, current Head of Albury-Wodonga Campus for his work in consolidating the campus as an integral part of the Border region. Professor Battersby will move to Dubbo in December to take up the Head of Campus role for this developing campus.
