Research addressing Australia’s future water resources and heart disease has lead to two researchers receiving the 2006 Vice-Chancellor's Award for Research Excellence at Charles Sturt University (CSU).

CSU’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Goulter was pleased to announce Professors Shahbaz Khan and Lexin Wang as winners of this year’s award.

Professor Shahbaz Khan.“Professor Khan has been recognised for his strong national leadership in cross-disciplinary research into water resources, particularly in bringing together researchers from the University and six CSIRO divisions, as well as working with two cooperative research centres.

“He has also worked closely with such private organisations Murray Water and Visy Paper Mills, owned by Richard Pratt.

“He has earned the trust of the irrigation industry and according to the Federal Minister for Agriculture, Peter McGauran, he is the ‘irrigator’s friend’.”

Professor Wang was recognised for his contribution to research in the field of cardiovascular science and medicine and his international collaboration.

Professor Lexin Wang.According to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wang’s contribution to national and international research into cardiovascular science and medicine over the past four years has been outstanding.

“He has established a successful cardiovascular research program at the University and in recent years focussed on clinical trials in arrhythmia, heart failure and factors affecting the risk of heart failure. He has done this while maintaining his research program in China, and some of his models have been adopted by other Australian institutions, including the Universities of Sydney and Tasmania,” said Professor Goulter.

“He has become a key researcher in CSU’s School of Biomedical Sciences.”

Both Professors Khan and Wang have also been awarded honorary academic positions in China in recent years in recognition of their contributions to that nation in their areas of expertise.

Each year the University recognises and encourages excellence in research through the presentation of the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Excellence Award.

“The University is proud of its high standard of research and is pleased to show its particular appreciation for the joint winners of this year’s award,” Professor Goulter said.
