One of Bathurst's favourite sons, Mr John Matthews will be recognised for his contribution to economic, civic and educational development in the City, when he is awarded an Honorary Doctor of Health Studies from Charles Sturt University during graduation celebrations this week.

During his 11 year term as Mayor of from 1965 to 1976, Mr Matthews saw the development of new industries and enterprises, such as Clyde Industries, Uncle Bens, Devro and the relocation of the Central Mapping Authority, established themselves in Bathurst.

This civic leadership followed many years as proprietor of John Matthews Pharmacy in George Street, where he still maintains an interest.

Mr Matthews' interest in politics spread beyond local government where as a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council between 1981 and 1991 his contribution was welcomed on Government Committees including the Treasury, the Government's Transport and the Government's Rural Committee.

His contribution to the pharmacy profession has included positions as Director of Australian Pharmaceuticals Ltd. of which he is currently Chairman. As a Member of the Pharmacy Guild, Mr Matthews has served on a number of advisory groups to government including the Steering Committee Investigating the Location and Distribution of Pharmacy Outlets and the Central Western Districts Advisory Council.

A long time friend and supporter of CSU, Mr Matthews was a member of the Heath Committee, convened to establish the first colleges of advanced education in NSW, which included both Mitchell College in Bathurst and Riverina College in Wagga.

Mr Matthews will receive his award in a ceremony at Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre on Wednesday 7 April commencing at 10.30 am.
