Due to the current fire emergencies in many areas of Australia's eastern states, Charles Sturt University (CSU) is ensuring that affected students and their families receive the University's sympathy and support.
Professor Garry Marchant, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), said, "It is likely that some students and staff will be affected by the fires in New South Wales and are experiencing stress and possible trauma, so Charles Sturt University will do whatever it can to reduce this".
"University staff who deal with these students, or their families, will take a sympathetic and flexible approach. We need to remove any administrative blockages that will add to the difficulties they are currently experiencing."
Professor Marchant noted that, at a time when students are preparing for exams and completing final assessments, the fires have caused extensive property damage, evacuations, reduced capacity to travel, and loss of services such as power supplies.
"We appreciate that studies may have been disrupted due to the bushfires and we have support services available to assist,” he said.
“Stress associated with natural disasters such as bushfires can adversely affect academic performance, as well as impacting on other aspects of daily life. Effects can be both short and longer term. CSU Student Counsellors can provide support and assistance. Students who are affected by the bush fires can submit a special consideration form or contact Student Central on 1800 275 278."
Professor Marchant also reminded students about the Student Emergency Equity Grants (SEEG) available to students in financial hardship who have suffered a recent emergency or adverse event. SEEG's can be used to replace goods, property, or assist with travel expenses. The application form and guidelines are available here or contact Student Central.
