Two Charles Sturt University (CSU) student advertising teams are again finalists in the annual International Advertising Association’s (IAA) ‘Big Idea’ competition, a national advertising contest for Australian university students.
“This is a fantastic achievement,” said Ms Anne Llewellynn, lecturer in advertising at the CSU School of Communication and Creative Industries in Bathurst.
“The University’s on campus student advertising agency fields two final-year teams each year, Kajulu Red and Kajulu Blue. Both teams have put in many weeks of long hours, intense work and lots of ‘blood, sweat and tears’,” she said.
“That both teams are finalists, like last year, is further proof that Charles Sturt University really does offer the very best advertising degree in Australia.”
CSU’s Kajulu Communications advertising teams have won the ’Big Idea’ competition six times since its inception in 2003, and have also won the international InterAd World Advertising Championship award three times since 1999.
The Australia Chapter of the IAA invites all IAA-accredited tertiary institutions in Australia to enter teams in its annual competition. The challenge is to submit an industry-standard professional campaign presentation for an Australian charity or not-for-profit organisation. In 2011 the client was Coeliac Australia.
The IAA ‘Big Idea’ judges praised the high standard of all entries and the creativity of the students.
The president and chair of the IAA Australia Chapter, Ms Heather Leembruggen, said when announcing the finalists, “Innovative and creative ideas came from all the teams and the client and the judges are most impressed with the calibre of the submissions and the insights and original thought that went into all the efforts”.
Mr David Whittle, managing director (Australia) of advertising agency M&C Saatchi, and chair of the judging panel, said, “The work showcased significant strategic skills, innovative ideas and excellent execution. It's gratifying to know that our industry is about to welcome some brilliant fresh talent”.
The national business development manager for Coeliac Australia, Mr David Sullivan, said, “The quality, depth of research and detailed analysis were of a very high standard. There is little doubt in my mind that many of the participating students will rightly find their place and make a significant contribution in this their chosen field”.
The Kajulu Red and Kajulu Blue teams, with two other finalist teams, will present their recommendations to the IAA committee and judging panel in Sydney on Monday 14 November, when the national champions will be announced.
