The final countdown is on for the launch of a new online magazine created and designed by a team of graphic design students from Charles Sturt University (CSU).
The new colour publication,
Hatch will go live at midnight tonight, Monday 31 May, only days before its creation is the subject of a lecture in Sweden.
The team was support by Mr Michael Agzarian, graphic design course coordinator in the School of Communication and Creative Industries at CSU in Wagga Wagga and his colleague graphic design lecturer Mr Padraig McNamara.
“This project aimed to give the students real life and practical experience in their chosen profession. Through this project, they have been fine-tuning the students’ understanding of editorial design,” Mr Agzarian said.
“At the centre of Hatch is the idea of perception of images,” one of the magazine’s producers and student Ms Missy Dempsey said. “No two people will ever feel exactly the same about an image or draw precise conclusions.”
“Working on Hatch allowed us as students to become a highly organised collaborative team,” said producer and student Ms Katie Fairservice. “By splitting into two teams, half the class furthered their understanding of editorial design while the other students gained knowledge in the promotion and production of the magazine.”
Student Mr Glen Whitelaw said, "The whole Hatch experience has really opened my eyes to the concept of teamwork. The magazine has had input from so many different designers and because of this it has turned out to be very different from your average publication."
The next challenge for the students will be a group presentation on the development of Hatch to students at the Broby Grafiska school in Sweden.
Accompanied by Mr Agzarian, 16 final year graphic design students and students in the double degree graphic design/photography program will leave CSU in Wagga Wagga for Sweden on Friday 4 June.
In addition to their presentation on Hatch at the Broby Grafiska, the study trip will also include Paris and London.
“Broby Grafiska is the only school in Scandinavia offering training in flexographic printing and is Sweden’s centre for packaging design and printing and will be wonderful exposure for Charles Sturt University students,” Mr Agzarian said.
The trip is one of
CSU Global’s Short Term Programs aimed an increasing international study experiences for CSU students.
