Students have the world at their feet

CSU wants its students to take on the world according to newly-appointed CSU Global manager, Dr Shevahn Telfser.

Charles Sturt University (CSU) wants its students to take on the world according to newly-appointed CSU Global manager, Dr Shevahn Telfser.

The University expects 12.5 per cent of its graduates in 2013 to have undertaken some international experience during their studies and aims to lift that total to 18 per cent over the next three years.

Dr Telfser said CSU graduates had the world at their feet.

“I think international academic study is a huge growth area,” she said.

“Graduates need that experience to develop professionally in the modern world, and I think CSU Global is in a unique position to have a big influence on graduate outcomes.”

CSU Global is a initiative of the University dedicated to helping students get international experience through short term study programs, exchanges, internships and longer trips.

“The programs are all academically accredited, ranging from three weeks to a year, and we can provide sponsorship for students to assist with the cost of travel,” Dr Telfser said.

“We negotiate partnership agreements with industry and other universities and work with our own academics to develop suitable programs for students.”

This year CSU will send almost 400 students overseas, including Bachelor of Agricultural Business Management students to China and Vietnam, biomedical science students to India and Europe and media students to East Timor.

“We go into the USA and Latin America, and we run programs in Europe and the Pacific Islands as well,” Dr Telfser said.

“There is significant government focus right now to ensure Australian graduates have some experience in Asia, and part of our role is to help students access any funding available to support them in getting that experience.

“The key is to ensure students appreciate the opportunities that are available.”

Besides professional and academic placements and exchanges, CSU Global programs also include volunteer options which allow students to satisfy the requirements of particular subjects.

Volunteer options available to CSU students this year include Youth Challenge Australia, Global Vision International, Student Partnerships Worldwide, and Projects Abroad.
