- Professor Grant joins elected body of over 700 leading researchers and professionals across the social science disciplines
Professor Stan Grant, Chair and Founding Director of Charles Sturt University’s Yindyamarra Nguluway, has been elected as one of 21 new Fellows of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.
ASSA is an elected body of over 700 leading researchers and professionals across the social science disciplines. It is focused on drawing on the expertise and knowledge of its fellows, and partnering with other organisations to advance and promote social science research in ways that improve the lives of people and society.
Fellows are elected to the Academy annually by their peers through a rigorous selection process.
Charles Sturt’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Mark Evans, said Professor Grant has been one of Australia’s most important commentators on international relations for the past three decades with a particular focus on war, conflict and development.
“Professor Grant is one of Australia’s great story tellers on First Nations life. In recent times, however, it is his moral philosophy that has come to the fore, tacking issues such as love, identity, truth and reconciliation,” Professor Evans said.
“He writes on the big questions of our time with passion, insight and hope. There could be no worthier recipient of this fellowship.”
ASSA President, Professor Richard Holden, welcomed Professor Grant to the Fellowship, saying he and his cohort are “the architects of progress and visionaries of social science”.
“The election of these individuals as Fellows of the Academy exemplifies the exceptional calibre of research and scholarship within the social sciences,” Professor Holden said.
“Their work is not only academically significant, but also holds immense practical relevance for shaping policies, improving communities and advancing our understanding of complex societal challenges.”
“Through rigorous research and evidence-based analysis, social scientists contribute valuable insights that inform decision-making, drive innovation and enhance the wellbeing of individuals and communities.”
Professor Grant has been awarded three Walkley awards, two Peabody awards, four Asia TV awards, an Australian TV Logie award, International Indigenous Trailblazer award, two Australian Academy of Cinema Television awards, an Australian Heritage Literature award and an Association of International Sports Journalists award, among many others.
Professor Grant will have the opportunity to give a three-minute presentation on his work at the Academy’s New Fellow Presentations: a public event to be held at the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra from 2pm on Thursday 23 November.
