Gerard MooreThe major issues in contemporary theology can be explored more thoroughly through a newly revised and expanded higher degree offered by Charles Sturt University (CSU).

Head of the CSU School of Theology Associate Professor Gerard Moore (pictured) said the new Master of Theology reflected the importance of the study of theology in the context of dynamic contemporary global events and developments.

"The partner colleges that form the Charles Sturt University School of Theology - St Mark's National Theological Centre (Canberra), St Francis' Theological College (Brisbane), St Barnabas' Theological College (Adelaide), and the United Theological College (Parramatta) - believe the course will enable students to develop an advanced understanding of major issues in contemporary theology," Professor Moore said.

"While it is now a slightly longer course of study, the Master of Theology, which is available from the start of 2016, offers depth and breadth in theological education by enabling either greater choice of subjects or more in-depth investigation of a particular theological sub-discipline.

"This offers students the flexibility of choosing from two streams; they can select subjects from several theological sub-disciplines, or focus on a research stream culminating in a dissertation written over two semesters.

"The degree also offers subject electives in all four theological sub-disciplines: systematic theology, practical theology, biblical studies, and Church history."

Professor Moore said additional new subjects are offered for 2016. These include Classic Texts in Christian Theology, Theology and Spirituality in Contemporary Engagement, Political Theology, Contemporary Issues in Practical Theology, Public Theology, Advanced Seminar in Mission and Evangelism, and The Philosophy of Religious History. The research stream of the new CSU Master of Theology provides another pathway toward a Higher Degree by Research.

In order to qualify for admission, students must hold an undergraduate degree in theology or its equivalent, or have obtained a Credit average or higher in the CSU Graduate Diploma of Theology.
