Tens of thousands of schools students in Australia and 14 countries around the globe will sit the Australian National Chemistry Quiz next week, which is sponsored by Charles Sturt University.

The quiz, which will be translated into six languages, is the major event of National Chemistry Week that runs from Sunday 22 - Saturday 29 July.

The school students from Years 7 to 12, who will sit the quiz on Thursday 26 July, will do so thanks to the efforts of quiz coordinator, CSU’s Charles Fogliani and his partner Mary.

Mr Fogliani, a senior lecturer in the School of Nursing and Health Science on CSU’s Bathurst Campus, has coordinated the quiz each year since it began in 1985 on behalf of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. Earlier this year his contribution to chemistry education earned him an Australian Medal in the Queens Birthday Honours List.

“The quiz aims to encourage and promote chemistry education,” Mr Fogliani said.

The top students in each state or country will have their achievements recognised with a formal plaque, while the top 40 percent of students in each state or country will also receive a certificate of merit.

Mr Fogliani said many students use their achievements in the National Chemistry Quiz to boost their applications for scholarships for tertiary study.

In 1999, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute’s National Chemistry Quiz became a governor of CSU’s Mitchell Foundation Trust, sponsoring scholarships for first year students in the School of Nursing and Health Science.
