The first fires of the latest bushfire season have already affected several regions in NSW and Victoria. The combination of unseasonally hot weather and very dry conditions have combined to create serious to extreme conditions. Bushfires are currently burning from the Pilliga forest of northwest NSW, to Mudgee in central NSW and the Victorian Alps.

Charles Sturt University is based in inland Australia and has experts who can comment on many aspects of the effects of bushfires, including the economy and local communities:
  • Professor Allan Curtis, on land management, social and economic effects of bushfires and fire management at the interface between private and public land;
  • Dr Geoff Burrows, on bush and tree regeneration, especially eucalypts, after a fire;
  • Dr Gary Luck, on the effects on native fauna;
  • Associate Professor Dirk Spennemann, on managing and protecting our cultural and historical heritage against bushfires; and,
  • Dr Rik Thwaites, on effects on tourism in North East Victoria.
These researchers are available on CSU’s Albury-Wodonga or Wagga Wagga Campuses in coming months. Contact CSU Media for interviews.
