Skills gaps: free, information nights on careers in healthcare

Charles Sturt is hosting information nights in Albury-Wodonga, Wagga Wagga and Port Macquarie for prospective students looking for a career in healthcare.

  • Charles Sturt is hosting three Careers in Health Info Nights
  • The sessions will be held in November in Albury-Wodonga, Wagga Wagga and Port Macquarie
  • Potential students will hear from frontline workers about career opportunities in a range of fields, such as nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pathology and more

Prospective Charles Sturt University students will rarely find an opportunity to get a better idea of the day in the life of a healthcare professional than via the University’s upcoming Careers in Health Info Nights.

Events will be held in Albury-Wodonga on Monday 11 November, Wagga Wagga on Tuesday 12 November and Port Macquarie on Wednesday 20 November, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

Attendees will receive a glimpse of what it takes to become a doctor or paramedic and what it looks like to spend a day in the life of nurses, pathologists, pharmacists, podiatrists and more.

The Careers in Health Info Nights, are designed to explore health careers for current high school students, TAFE students, parents, carers and career advisers.

Academics and clinicians working on the frontline will be available to lend their expertise and demonstrate the many pathways into a health career.

The information sessions will also help to remove any myths surrounding careers in healthcare, such as pharmacists just dispense medications or podiatrists just treat ingrown toenails. Attendees will receive all the details on potential health careers by talking to working clinicians.

Executive Dean of the Charles Sturt Faculty of Science and Health Professor Megan Smith said these information sessions support the University’s strategy to promote rural health education and address regional workforce needs.

“Charles Sturt University is committed to enhancing rural, remote and regional healthcare,” she said.

“It is important for Charles Sturt to be providing a place for our community to study and prepare for their future health care close to where they live.

“We are an experienced provider of health workforce education, having been successfully building our local health workforce across the full breadth of careers for more than 30 years.”

There are more than 35 courses in Charles Sturt’s health portfolio, including Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science, which will be featured during these sessions.

Health disciplines to be showcased over the three sessions are:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Podiatry
  • Nursing
  • Medicine
  • Psychology
  • Radiography
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacy
  • Dentistry/Dental Hygiene
  • Exercise Science
  • Paramedicine
