A link between globalisation, economic growth and poverty in 11 Asian developing countries is highlighted in a book to be launched in London, England next month.

Charles Sturt University School of Management senior lecturer Dr Kishor Sharma and 20 other leading academics from Australia, the United Kingdom and Asia started researching the subject in 2001 to shed light on the debate over effects of globalisation on poverty and equity.

Trade Policy, Growth and Poverty in Asian Developing Countries, to be launched by CSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Goulter on Tuesday 22 July, explains why good governance, effective institutions, infrastructure and pro-rural investment must accompany globalisation.

“Rich countries can make a significant contribution in lifting the billions of people out of poverty in developing countries by improving market access, ending subsidised agricultural over-production in developed countries and providing financial and technical assistance,” Dr Sharma said.

Dr Sharma said the globalisation debate has come under close scrutiny as public demonstrations against it rise.

“East Asia has made noticeable achievements in alleviating poverty, while poverty remains a major development challenge in South Asia,” he said.

“The progress East Asian countries have made in reducing poverty is often attributed to globalisation which improved their access to superior technology and the world market.”

Trade Policy, Growth and Poverty in Asian Developing Countries will be launched at 3pm following the CSU graduation ceremonies in London on 22 July at Guildhall.
