Honorary doctorates for retail and wine industry leaders

National leaders in the retail and wine sectors in Australia and overseas will be honoured by Charles Sturt University during three days of graduation ceremonies in Wagga Wagga in April.

National leaders in the retail and wine sectors in Australia and overseas will be honoured by Charles Sturt University (CSU) during three days of graduation ceremonies in Wagga Wagga in April.

Over 2 000 graduates will receive their undergraduate and postgraduate awards from the faculties of Arts, Business, Education and Science on Wednesday 9 April, Thursday 10 April and Friday 11 April at Joyes Hall on CSU’s Wagga Wagga Campus. [see picture here].
 
CSU Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Ian Goulter will present Honorary Doctorates to:
  • Reserve Bank Board member and former Chief Executive Officer of Woolworths, Mr Roger Corbett, AM who will receive an Honorary Doctor of Business from 2.30pm on Thursday 10 April. He will be recognised for his contribution to the Australian community and the retail industry.
  • Dr John Casella received his honorary doctorate from CSU with his parents, his wife and four children also attending the ceremony in Wagga Wagga. Managing Director and Winemaker of the Riverina-based, Casella Wines and CSU graduate, Mr John Casella, who will also receive an Honorary Doctor of Business from 2.30pm on Friday 11 April. He will be recognised for his contribution to the Australian wine industry, particularly through the creation of new export markets, the economic health of the Riverina and to wine education and research programs at CSU.
Other graduation news includes:
Wednesday 9 April, 10.30am:
  • Faculty of Arts graduation, including 180 graduates from the School of Humanities & Social Sciences and the School Visual and Performing Arts.
  • The new Dean of the CSU Faculty of Arts, Professor Anthony Cahalan will deliver the Occasional Speech.
  • The Lila Kirilik Social Action Memorial Prize will be awarded to Bachelor of Social Work graduate Ms Simran Rajkumar from India and Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Social Work graduate Mr David Post from Wagga Wagga. The local mentoring project, ‘Plan-It Youth’, will receive a $500 donation as part of the prize. The graduates completed research projects on the ‘Plan-It Youth’ program, which aims to empower young people at risk of early departure from high school.
  • Mrs Kylie Hamblin from Ganmain will be awarded a Master of Psychology. Mrs Hamblin studied at CSU while she had three children in 2003, 2005 and 2007. She will attend the Faculty of Arts graduation with her husband, mother, mother-in-law and grandparents.
  • Mrs Jan Bridges from Dubbo will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts. Her daughter, son and son-in-law have all previously graduated from CSU.
Wednesday 9 April, 2.30pm:
  • Faculty of Education graduation, including 247 graduates from the School of Education and the School of Information Studies.
  • The Head of the CSU School of Theology and former Bishop to the Australian Defence Forces, Professor Tom Frame will make the Occasional Speech.
Thursday 10 April, 10.30am:
  • Faculty of Business ceremony, including 196 undergraduates from the School of Commerce, the School of Computing & Mathematics, the International School of Business and the School of Accounting & Computer Science.
  • Retired Professor of Management at the Australian Graduate School of Management, University of NSW, Emeritus Professor Roger Collins, will deliver the Occasional Speech.
Thursday 10 April, 2.30pm:
  • Faculty of Business graduation, including 158 postgraduates from the School of Commerce, the School of Computing & Mathematics, the International School of Business and the School of Accounting & Computer Science.
  • Honorary Doctor of Business to be presented to Mr Roger Corbett, AM.
  • Mr Roger Corbett, AM will deliver the Occasional Speech.
  • Almost 40 graduates from Cambodia will attend the ceremony to receive their postgraduate awards including Master of Business and Master of Business Administration. They completed their studies in Phnom Pen through one of CSU’s trans-national educational programs. The graduates will be accompanied by almost 60 guests.
Friday 11 April, 10.30am:
  • Faculty of Science graduation, including 192 graduates from the Schools of Biomedical Sciences & Environmental Sciences.
  • Professor of Cardiology from the Australian School of Advanced Medicine at Macquarie University, Professor Hosen Kiat, will deliver the Occasional Speech.
Friday 11 April, 2.30pm:
  • Faculty of Science graduation, including 200 graduates from the Schools of Nursing & Midwifery, Animal & Veterinary Sciences and the Wine & Food Sciences.
  • Honorary Doctor of Business to be presented to Mr John Casella.
  • Managing Director of the Grains Research and Development Corporation, Mr Peter Reading, will deliver the Occasional Speech.
