Charles Sturt University (CSU) is mourning the loss of Mr Ron Potter, AM, who played a key role in the establishment of wine science education and research at the University.
Mr Potter died in Griffith last week, aged 83.
He was instrumental in gaining industry support for wine science courses at the Riverina College of Advanced Education (RCAE) in 1975, which later became CSU. He also supported the development of the CSU Winery in 1977.
The University recognised him with an Honorary Doctorate of Applied Science in 1993. The hub of wine education and research at CSU, The Ron Potter Centre for Grape and Wine Research at Wagga Wagga, was later named in his honour.
In paying tribute to Mr Potter, Head of CSU’s School of Agricultural and Wine Sciences Professor John Mawson, said, “Mr Potter not only helped to establish the wine science program at Charles Sturt University, he was a long term benefactor and provided support for graduates as they began their careers in the industry.”
Mr Potter was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2006 in recognition of his service to the Australian wine industry, particularly the development of new technology.
He is survived by his wife Fran, his children Wendy, Chris, Julie and Jenny, 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Flags across CSU campuses were flown at half mast to mark the funeral of Mr Potter on Tuesday 25 September.
